Midwinter Meeting weathers economic storm
The Chicago Dental Society’s Midwinter Meeting, held Feb. 26 through March 1, attracted nearly 7,000 dentists. Total attendance for the meeting was 31,333, representing a 9 percent drop over the 2008 figures, according to the Chicago Dental Society. The 2008 figures were an all-time high in the meeting’s 144-year history.
"I think we all went into this meeting holding our breath a little," Dr. David Kumamoto, CDS president, said, "But the feedback from exhibitors and the number of sold-out courses reveal just how strong our meeting is."
Nearly one-quarter of the conference’s 240+ courses were sold out, and the vast majority of courses were near capacity. The exhibit floor, which showcased 570 companies, was completely sold out months in advance. The Midwinter Meeting was recently chosen as offering the best cost-to-value benefit of any dental tradeshow in the United States, according to 66 percent of exhibitors responding to a post-show survey.

3M ESPE LavaTM Zirconia for Implant Abutments
3M ESPE introduced a new indication for its LavaTM Zirconia - custom-designed implant abutments. Dentists and laboratories can now offer implant patients the natural beauty of shaded Lava zirconia that can be custom-designed for the individual patient. Implant abutments made from Lava zirconia are compatible with a wide variety of implant systems, allowing dentists to provide patients with a highly esthetic option while still utilizing the underlying implant systems with which they are familiar. To create the abutment, Lava zirconia is cemented to a prefabricated titanium abutment interface. Unlike many all-ceramic abutments on the market today, the metal-to-metal connection between the screw and abutment means the screw does not torque directly into the zirconia material. This allows dentists to follow standard recommendations for torque pressures on the screw and abutment.

Kerr Herculite® Ultra
Kerr’s Herculite® UltraTM nanohybrid composite offers advanced nanofiller technology, delivering superior aesthetics and optimal handling. Other features include high polishability, and strength and endurance unique to the Herculite brand. Herculite Ultra chameleon-like blending improves the lifelike appearance of the final restoration by replicating the opalescence and fluorescence of the natural tooth. The advantages of nanohybrid composites are significant - from better aesthetics to improved polish and clinical gloss as well as better mechanical strength. Nanohybrids contain nanoparticles, much smaller filler particles in the range of approximately 5 to 100 nanometres. When combined with conventional hybrid fillers, these composite resins are called nanohybrids.

Sirona CEREC Connect® Models
Sirona Dental Systems introduced its CEREC® Connect models at this year’s LMT Lab Day Chicago event in February. Available May 2009, CEREC Connect models will allow any indication for inLab® users that can be achieved with conventional models. A CEREC Connect articulator system will also be available in quadrant and full-arch structures. CEREC Connect begins when a digital impression and prescription form are submitted from the CEREC dentist to the inLab laboratory of choice. The dental technician is able to design the restoration on the basis of a virtual model, without the need for a physical model. The restoration is then fabricated on the inLab milling unit. When the case calls for it, a digital impression received from the CEREC dentist can be uploaded to infiniDent, and a highly-precise digitally fabricated model will be sent to the laboratory ready for waxing-up or porcelain build-up. CEREC Connect is a complete communication gateway between CEREC dentists and inLab laboratories. It paves the way for the "impression-free" dental practice and a "model-free" dental laboratory.

Sirona CEREC® AC Powered by Bluecam
Sirona Dental Systems launched the CEREC AC (Acquisition Center) powered by Bluecam, a technological advance in chairside CAD/CAM. At the heart of CEREC AC is the Bluecam handheld acquisition camera, which uses a highly visible blue light LED (light emitting diode) to capture digital impressions. Sirona’s Bluecam has the following features:
- Easier and shorter acquisition times because the camera acquires the image automatically - it senses the right time to capture the image, and does so without intervention from the user.
- Provides a uniform field of illumination for increased precision.
- Captures half-arch and full-arch impressions with unparalleled speed - half-arch impression in 40 seconds; full-arch impressions in two minutes.
The optics used in the Bluecam handheld camera have been optimized for a higher depth of field and accuracy, and have been coupled with increased computing power to display the most crisp, detailed digital impressions possible, which yield the most precise 3D digital models.
