Benco Dental acquires Eastern Dental Supply
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-based Benco Dental acquired Eastern Dental Supply. Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction closed on March 1.
Eastern Dental Supply has served the south central Pennsylvania market for over two decades. Owners Barbara and David Jacobs will join Benco Dental, bringing with them over 50 years of combined experience. Several key team members will also join Benco Dental. "We look for strong customer focus, growth, and solid market positioning. Eastern Dental Supply brought all three to the table," said Charles Cohen, president of Benco Dental. "Eastern’s management team did an excellent job of creating the kind of win-win customer relationships that we strive for. We look forward to strengthening these established relationships even further through our expanded product and service offerings."
Jaguar Dental Specialties joins ADC
Nashville, Tenn.-based American Dental Cooperative (ADC) announced that Miami, Fla.-based Jaguar Dental Specialties, LLC, has joined the membership group. This brings the total ADC membership to 26 full service dental distributors. Jaguar Dental Specialties services southern Florida and extends into the Caribbean market. They have three sales representatives and three service technicians. Ed Dolce is the sales manager, bringing over 25 years dental sales experience to this start-up dealership. Joining Dolce is another experienced sales veteran, Jose Martinez.
Patterson acquires dental and veterinary distributors
St. Paul, Minn.-based Patterson Companies, Inc., recently acquired both a regional dental distributor, and veterinary supply distributor. Terms of the acquisitions were not disclosed. Scranton, Pa.-based Leventhal & Sons, Inc., the acquired dental distributor, has annual sales of approximately $18 million. The company serves customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Maryland.
"In addition to strengthening Patterson’s current position in the northeastern U.S., this acquisition expands the range of products and services available to Leventhal’s customers, while creating additional opportunities for the employees of this third-generation distributor," said Scott P. Henry Schein hosts "March Madness," debuts Global Reflections offering for healthcare professionals who want to go "green"
Melville, N.Y.-based Henry Schein Dental’s recent "March Madness" event joined customers and supplier partners. More than 400 dental industry attendees gathered March 7th in Long Island for a day full of seminars and continuing education credits. Attendees enjoyed a hands-on look at the latest dental technologies and speaking one-on-one with more than 50 Henry Schein Dental supplier partners.
Henry Schein also debuted Henry Schein Global Reflections, a 16-page offering of eco-friendly products that can help healthcare professionals who want to "green" their practices. Printed on recycled paper using environmentally-friendly ink, the premier Henry Schein Global Reflections brochure
includes natural oral care products, recycled paper products for practices, cleaning products with low environmental
impact, rechargeable batteries, energy-efficient light bulbs and business machines, as well as other products.

Midmark appoints two, holds national sales meeting for dental division
Versailles, Ohio-based Midmark Corp. recently appointed Tim Silvers to product manager, sterilization products, and Crissy Treon to associate product manager, dental products. In his new role, Silvers will be in a position to apply his marketing skills to a key product line shared by Midmark’s dental, medical and veterinary divisions. He will continue to report to Bill Zulauf, director of marketing, dental products. Silvers joined Midmark in 2002 as the air and vacuum product manager for the dental division.
Treon will be responsible for assisting in the development of strategic marketing plans for Midmark’s full line of dental products including dental chairs, instrument delivery units, sterilizers, lighting, vacuums and compressors. Her initial focus will be on the dental casework line including Midmark’s new European Design casework. She will report directly to Zulauf. Treon joined Midmark in 2005. She was the promotions coordinator for the dental products division for the last three years
Midmark also recently held its annual national sales meeting for its dental division in Versailles, Ohio, where it announced its annual top sales performers for 2007. This year’s meeting was themed "The Power Within." The objective of the meeting was to provide an educational setting that was energetic and motivational. The theme, inspired by "The Wizard of Oz," motivated the sales force to reach its goals by having the product education (the "brains"), the heart (being caring and passionate in their work) and the courage (and strength) to provide solutions for its distributors and end-user customers. The meeting also highlighted some additions and changes to the Midmark line of dental products.
"We’ve come a long way in a very short period of time in the dental business," said Eric Shirley, Midmark vice president and general manager, dental division. "With new Midmark air & vac products, a new track light monitor, the acquisition of European Design and new products launching later this year, our sales meetings are now extremely packed with good information and high levels of optimism and enthusiasm."
Included in this year’s four-day meeting was sales training for Midmark’s new casework offering from its recent acquisition, European Design, Inc., which allows Midmark to present two types of casework to its customers, durable metal casework and now the warm European Design wood cabinetry. Other product training included Midmark’s 641 Power Procedures Chair, designed for oral surgeons, dermatologists and plastic surgeons.
Midmark also honored its top dental sales performers during the meeting at an awards banquet. The awards included:

Hu-Friedy celebrates 100 years serving dental professionals
Chicago, Ill.-based Hu-Friedy is celebrating its 100th year in business serving dentists and dental hygienists. The year-long centennial celebration officially began at the Midwinter Dental Convention in Chicago on February 22. Hu-Friedy was founded in 1908, and today is owned by the Saslow family.

Freud announces partnership with Carson Dental Supply
Flanders, N.J.-based Freud Dental Supplies, a division of S&S Nonlimited Inc., has announced a partnership with Flowery Branch, Ga.-based Carson Dental. The new organization, named Freud-Carson, will supply its products throughout the United States through the Internet portal www.carsondental.com. Freud Dental Supply will support the new venture while maintaining its local New Jersey/Philadelphia market under the Freud Dental Supply and Freud Services Equipment companies. The sales team previously at Carson will join the new entity, Freud-Carson, and be based at the Georgia location. Charlie Holley will manage the sales team at Freud-Carson, bringing his 10 years of distribution experience to the organization. The new company will represent over 90 manufacturers with 10 salespeople both in the field and in house.
Premier Dental offers dentists "A chance to make a difference"
Plymouth Meeting, Pa.-based Premier Dental Products Company launched a contest opened to all licensed dentists in the United States. The single prize consists of a contribution from Premier of $20,000 made in the winner’s name to the dental charity or dental university of their choice.

Parker passes away
Carl Parker, 85, died March 2008 at Hospice of the Sea, Boca Raton, Fla., with his family by his side after a battle with cancer. Parker was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Isador and Molly Pinsky. He is survived by his son, Andrew Parker; daughter, Randi Parker Germaine; grandchildren, Ian Parker, Katie Parker and Megan Germaine; and loving companion Mildred Wallach.
Parker founded Parkell Products in 1947 with his former partner, Alex Mitchell, primarily to market hand-instruments imported from post-war Europe. Parkell is now a leading manufacturer of electronic devices, adhesives and impression materials. Later in his dental career, he established Carl Parker Associates, which was a pioneer in private label products, especially impression material systems. He also consulted for many dental manufacturers. He is the former Industry Representative to the FDA Panel on Dental Devices and Past President of the DTA (formerly DMA). He has served on numerous dental industry panels and was a driving force for positive change in the dental industry.
He was one of the most popular and beloved individuals in the dental industry and will be missed by his family, friends and associates.
