At the Half

Usually at halftime of a basketball or football game, the TV commentators will assess the performance of the teams involved. I thought that given the past year, it might be appropriate for us to conduct our own assessment and see exactly where we are. Consider the size and scope of historical events that have occurred. Who would have imagined:
  • Gasoline prices of $4 per gallon.
  • A former First Lady as the front-runner to become President of the United States.
  • Her being outdone by an African American candidate with barely two years of Senate experience.
  • An economic collapse matched only in scope by stories you may have heard from your grandparents.
  • General Motors, in bankruptcy and 70 percent owned by the federal government.
  • CitiBank stock at $1 per share and also government-owned.
  • The threat of a pandemic swine flu outbreak.
  • Millions of jobs being lost in a matter of months.
Giving it too much thought can be downright depressing - if you let it. Despite all the gloomy news and the reality of these extraordinary times, guess what?

We are still going to work, doing our jobs, and doing our best to make lemonade from lemons. Keeping a positive perspective, consider the following:
  • The sun has continued to rise.
  • The baseball season started on time.
  • 120 million people voted for either Obama or McCain.
  • 100 million people voted for either Adam Lambert or Kris Allen for American Idol (not sure which list this one belongs in).
  • Banks are lending money again.
  • Americans are coping with the realities of the times and doing pretty well.
  • Doctors and dentists are still seeing patients and doing procedures, which means they need you!
  • As Sonny and Cher once said, "The beat goes on."

And so it does. While I am no fortune teller, I can tell you that the country and economy will weather this storm. I for one, think we are past the most difficult times. We are an amazingly resilient people and nation. Those who choose to move on and begin to return to a normal routine will be the ones who are rewarded. It is often said that one can be either part of the problem or part of the solution. I think I know which path you’ll choose.
